Frederick Henry Fiedler - QX49868 - Wooroolin WW11 Honour Board

Frederick Henry Fiedler, known as Bill, was born 29 Jan 1923 at Kingaroy the 2nd of 7 children of Fred & May Fiedler. Bill was enrolled at Wooroolin School on 30 Jan 1928 as pupil number 632, Bills father, Fred, was the local Carpenter and painter and they lived in Kate St opposite the site of the Commercial Hotel where his mother had lived as a youngster. The hotel was pulled down in 1927.
When Bill left school he worked at the Post Office on the night shift of the Telephone exchange as a “Night Boy”. ie. A night operator for the local telephone switchboard at the Post Office which at the time was run by Harry Hurst.
Bill was a Building Apprentice per his Army records, probably to his father, Fred Fiedler. But I understand he spent a lot of time with the Stumer and Ham families who had a Garage and Carrying Business next door, his first love being motors.
Bill joined the Australian Army Citizen Forces during 1942 and was transferred to the AIF on 25 Feb 1943 and served in the 1 Vehicle Park Workshop as a MV Mechanic. Bills army records are available on the NAA website and show that he served all over Qld and Thursday Island.
On 20 Oct 1944 the Wooroolin Post Office burnt down. Bill and his father were recalled from Army & CCC duty, to rebuild that Post Office as it still stands today. Bill was discharged on 24 Sep 1945 so the PO operated at the QNB site for almost a year.
The Fiedler family built many of the homes in the Wooroolin & Kingaroy area. They built my grandparents’ home at 300 Haly St, Kingaroy in 1948 Bills sister, Betty, boarded with them when she worked in Kingaroy.
The Fiedler family bought the Carrying Business that operated next door to their family home in 1949 from the Ham Family. The Carrying and Cream Runs (two of them, one East Wooroolin and one West Wooroolin) and petrol depot were all run from the office in the home. I understand that Bill ran Fiedler’s Garage and serviced their trucks. The garage still stands on the corner of Kate St and Main Rd of Wooroolin.
Bill married widow, Doreen Lobegeier (nee Voigt), in 1958 gaining a family of 4 children, twins Eileen and Nita, Howard and Viv. Bill & Doreen had 1 child together, Margaret. All 5 of their children attended Wooroolin School.
The Fiedler business was sold in 1967 to the McCullagh family when Bill & Doreen moved to Kingaroy.
Bill died in 2004 and is buried at Taabinga Cemetery where his wife joined him in 2015.
