Ernest Victor Fielding served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW2 (home service). First service was as a Private S.N. 178, 1st Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. Q227770, 9th Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps (Qld), WW2.
When he first enlisted in 1899 in the 1st QMI and his details were published with the rank and file in The Brisbane Courier, 18 Nov 1899, he was recorded as Private E. V. Fielding, single, Blenheim, via Laidley. In the Boer War Service Paybooks for the 1st QMI, Bk 1 p. 41, it is noted he directed part of his pay to W. Fielding, Blenheim, via Laidley. This was his older brother William Arthur Fielding who would also serve in the Boer war in a later contingent, the 5th QIB.
Ernest was invalided from service returning to Brisbane where he was discharged on 25 Aug 1900. Both his and his brother's names are on the Laidley, South African Boer War Honour Roll board within the Laidley Cultural Centre.
He enlisted again in 1942 for home service and on his Attestation Form, dated 15 Apr 1942, it is noted that; he was born at Laidley on 24 May 1880; he was married and a contractor; his N.O.K. was his wife Lilian Fielding, Laidley; and he had previously served in South Africa in the 1st QMI.
Ernest Victor Fielding was born on 24 May 1880 at Laidley, a son to John Fielding and Mary Ann Fielding (nee Moore). He married Lilian Head on 17 May 1905 in Queensland and they had 2 children. They resided in the Laidley district where Ernest pursued farming interests and later worked as a general contractor.
