Son of Charles George and Matilda Elizabeth KNOWLES of Bunya Street, Dalby, Qld.

He won a scholarship at the Toowoomba State School, and further won a scholarship which entitled him to two years' further education.  Charles was in the C.P.S. office at Dalby prior to enlistment.
