Bill was the eldest of four children of Henry (Harry) William Gardner (b1885 in Ipswich, QLD) and Violet Ann Heale (b1891 at Yarraman Creek, Darling Downs, QLD). Harry (a Labourer) and Violet married in 1913 in Yarraman, QLD where they settled and raised their family. Harry served in WWI (Private; Service No:18908) and returned to Yarraman where he was a Labourer.

Bill worked as a Labourer and Truck Driver in Yarraman before enlisting in the ACMF in November 1941. He was a Private (Service No:Q3772) with 2 Reconnaissance Battalion when he was Discharged in November 1943. Brother Sydney Gordon (Service No:QX39195) also served in WWII.

In 1948 Bill was working as a Labourer in Yarraman when he married Muriel Olive Barker (b1925 in Wondai, QLD). Bill and Muriel settled in Yarraman where Bill worked as a Labourer before becoming a Storekeeper in the early 1960s. Bill died in 1992 and Muriel in 2010.
