John, along with his mate Goff Brown, underwent militia training with the 51st Battalion aka the Far North Queensland Regiment in Cairns. When visiting his parents in Brisbane the NAB bank clerk enlisted and served in a postal unit in the Middle East. On return to Australia John transferred to the 2/2nd Anti-Tank Regiment. Goff transferred to that unit too and they served in Port Moresby and Milne Bay. On return to Australia they were joined by a young Frank Colwell before being sent to 60 Mile, near the Batchelor Airstrip. From there they went to the Atherton Tablelands for jungle training before embarking for the Battle of Balikpapan. After the war the three men kept in contact. John returned to the NAB before retiring to Newell Beach north of Mossman, Qld. He never married but remained great friends with the Lawson family of Mareeba as well as Goff and Frank.
