James Frank Gill, known as Frank

Frank was born 1903 in Derby, Derbyshire, England, to Richard Gill (a civil servant) and Jenny, nee Griffiths. He emigrated aged 20 in 1923 on board “Diogenes” to Innisfail, Queensland, Australia, where he was engaged in sugar cane farming. In 1935 he moved to Beaudesert, Queensland, leaving his two younger brothers in Innisfail. Frank enlisted at Kelvin Grove, Queensland on 17 Jun 1940, and was discharged in Dec 1945. He returned to live in Innisfail and took up a sugar cane farm in the Innisfail district with his younger brother Reg. They farmed in a partnership until Reg's health forced his retirement in 1959. Frank then married in 1960 at age 57 to widow Elsie Cotter, and they lived in happy retirement at Bingil Bay, Qld. After her death in 1968, Frank lived with his stepchildren, first at Edmonton, south of Cairns, and then in Townsville - where he died 11 Feb 1978. He was buried next to Elsie at Cairns cemetery.
