A Forgotten Digger who served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
49 years ago today, on the 11th June 1976, Private Charles Howard Tasker, 35th Battalion (Reg No-221), miner from Weston, New South Wales and Newcastle?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 84. METHODIST 3 (UNITING) F. 26.
Born at Birmingham, Warwickshire, England October 1891?, 1892? to Albert and Selina Tasker from No. 4 back of 165 Cottel Road, Birmingham, England; husband of Elizabeth Tasker nee Sneddon, married 1920, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1.7.1972, Newcastle, N.S.W., sleeping here, Charles enlisted on the 13th November 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Admitted to hospital 8.6.1917 (sprained ankle).
Wounded in action - 14.7.1917 (GSW or SW chest, left thigh, left arm, dangerously ill, Battle of Messines).
Transferred to England 4.8.1917.
Granted furlough in England from 27.9.1917 to 11.10.1917.
Commenced return to Australia 12.3.1918.
Charles arrived home on the 22nd May 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 6th August 1918.
Mr. Tasker’s name has been inscribed on the Weston Methodist Church Roll of Honor and the Weston Independent Order of Rechabites Tent No. 94 Roll of Honour. The district of Weston did not produce a War Memorial.
I located this Forgotten Digger resting in an unmarked grave, so November 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Albert Tasker, a son?, died 25.2.1931, Hamilton, N.S.W., also buried here on the 26.2.1931, no funeral or death notice located.
