The eldest of eight children, Walter was born at Moola nr Dalby, QLD in 1910. His father, Charles Frederick Gourley (b1878 in Craigiebourn, Victoria) and his mother, Mary Ashcroft (b1888 in Orbost, Victoria) married in 1908 in Dalby, QLD. Charles was a Selector at Moola where he and Mary raised their children before moving to Maryborough QLD in the early 1940s. 

Walter worked as a Labourer in Jandowae, Dalby QLD and was a Dairy Farmer in June 1941 when he enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:Q104591). Walter served in the NT and was attached to 2 Farm Section AASC when he was Discharged in March 1944.

In 1945 in Toowoomba, QLD Walter married Theresa Agnes Brunner (b1911 in Toowoomba, QLD) - Theresa was working as a Typist. The couple settled in Clifton on the Darling Downs, QLD where Walter was a Farmer. Theresa died in 1984 and Walter in 1999.
