Frederick Dalgleish Green

Fred is my maternal Grandmother's maternal 1st cousin & getting this story to this point has been a long time in the making as Fred estranged himself from our family after WW1, I believe due to the horrors he endured.

This is the same gentleman as on the WW1 SN 6013A record & I can now confirm that the attached photo to his WW1 file is of him (see attached here the clipping from the Charleville Times 27 SEP 1940 Page 4 verifying that he was known as Bob).

Only recently I discovered Fred's WW2 enlistment through this site & was taken aback, firstly because of his age but mainly because of the tragedies he witnessed in WW1, he saw his only brother/sibling, Edward Charles Green killed & also lost family members, uncle Thomas Bennet Green & cousin Frederick Sydney [Sid] Hartwell, I have previously added them to this site, he also received GSW's to both legs & was gassed in WW1.

Fred was born Frederick Dalgleish Green (SR's show Middle Name as Dalglish) on 17 SEP 1893 in Bilpah near Glenthompson, VIC (VIC BDM 31032/1893), he has obviously lowered his year of birth by 7 years to enable him to enlist in WW2 in Toowoomba, QLD on 14 JUN 1940 & was given a farewell by the Charleville District Patriotic Committee on 26 SEP 1940.

Fred sailed from Sydney on 03 FEB 1941 headed for the Middle East, it is recorded that on 21 SEP 1942 he was declared temporarily unfit for service for a period greater than 6 months & returned to Australia, he arrived back in Sydney on 11 DEC 1942 & discharged from the A.I.F. on 11 MAR 1944.

To my knowledge Fred never married, he died in Labrador Nursing Home on 09 JUL 1985 aged 91. I am proud what my cousin (something removed) did for our country, my regret is I never met him.
