Lance Corporal Allan James Gridley (Service No:QX28) enlisted in the Army on 20 October 1939 as a Private attached to 2nd/9th Infantry Battalion. He embarked from Sydney for Gourak, Scotland on 28 May 1940, and from Glasgow bound for the Middle East on 2 January 1941. Lance Corporal Gridley served in 'England, Egypt, Libya, Giarabub, Tobruk, Palestine, Syria, New Guinea, Milne Bay, Cape Endaiadere, Buna and Sandana Point' (National Archives Australia) and was Discharged on 12 April 1944.

Born in 1913 in Brisbane QLD, Allan was the second of three children of James (Jim) Gridley (b1884 in Eumundi, QLD) and Rebecca Wilson (b1878 in Brisbane, QLD). Jim (a Timber Getter) and Rachel (a Dressmaker) married in Brisbane in 1908 and settled in Eumundi where Jim was a Timber Getter. Jim served in WWI.

Allan settled in Eumundi and was a Farm Labourer when he enlisted in the Army in 1939. In 1942 in Eumundi he married Elsie Edith Mulcahy (b1917 in Nambour, QLD). Allan and Edith lived in Eumundi and at Tuchekoi via Pomona, where Allan was a Dairy Farmer. Edith died in 1991 and Allan in 2007.
