Lieutenant Herbert Charles Gridley (Service No:Q268993) enlisted in the ACMF on 15 February 1943 and served with the Australian and New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU) in New Guinea from 8 December 1944 to 5 November 1946. Lieutenant Gridley was Discharged on 21 February 1947.
Born in 1891 in Eumundi QLD, Herbert was the eighth of nine children of George Gridley (b1849 in Suffolk, England) and Edith Hannah Burrell (b1858 in Surrey, England) - George immigrated in 1856, arriving in Moreton Bay with his parents and siblings on board the James Fearnie and Edith immigrated abt 1868. George (a Timber Getter in Yandina, QLD) and Edith married in 1873 in Brisbane and settled at Yandina and Eumundi where George was a Timber Getter and Settler. In 1905 Edith moved to Brisbane for the children's education - the girls joined the Salvation Army and the boys learned trades. George joined his family in 1910.
Herbert was apprenticed to a Plumber in Brisbane in 1905 and in 1915 was a Tram Conductor. In 1917 Herbert (a Police Constable) married Kate Simmonds (b1896 in Brisbane, QLD) and he and Kate lived in Rockhampton QLD, then in Brisbane where Herbert was a Motorman before joining the Commonwealth Security Service and living in New Guinea where he was an Inspector of Police. By 1943 Herbert and Kate were in Brisbane where Herbert was with the Commonwealth Security Service when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge in 1947, Herbert and Kate settled in Beerwah and Buderim QLD where Herbert was a Farmer before retiring to Maroochydore, QLD. Kate died in 1972 and Herbert in 1984.
