Biography contributed by Robert Wight

Arthur Notman, aged almost 24, enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 15 June 1916. He embarked overseas on 21 October and arrived in England on 28 December 1916, where he spent the next three months training at the Larkhill Camp in Wiltshire.

He left England and arrived in France on 11 April 1917, where he joined his battalion on 1 May 1917. He was soon into action, initially at the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917, and then again at Broodseinde Ridge on 4 October 1917.

The battalion moved to France in early April 1918 to assist counter the German Spring Offensive on the Somme and was then involved in the Battles of Hamel (July), Amiens (August) and the Hindenburg Line (September).

He returned to England in early March 1919, then departed for Australia on 12 May 1919.

He arrived back in Melbourne on 29 June, where he was formally discharged from the AIF on 6 August 1919.
