James Douglas Harris was the 6th of 9 children of Alfred Edward Harris and Elizabeth Roxborough Smith. Brothers Leslie Alfred and Edward David also served in the Australian Defence Forces.
Born in Ipswich, QLD James was living in Brisbane, QLD and working as a Labourer when he married Elizabeth Baird Locke in 1929. He was a Labourer when he enlisted on 9 October 1942 in the Australian Army and served as a Private (Service No: QX61152/Q265287) with 14th Light Horse (Volunteers) and 2.1 Australian Guard Regiment. James also served from 1944 to 1946 as a Private (Service No: QX265287) with 57/60 Australian Infantry Battalion in Bougainville
James and his family moved to Goodna, QLD where he worked as a Truck Driver
