William joined the 50th Battalion and left Adelaide on board the Afric on 7 November 1916, reaching Plymouth, England on 9 January 1917. He proceeded to France with his unit on 14 October 1917. William had been admitted to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital, London with rheumatism in May 1917 and in January 1918 was hospitalised at Queen’s Military Hospital with bronchitis.
William suffered gunshot wounds to both arms in action in France on 13 September 1918 and was sent to Reading War Hospital for treatment. He returned to Australia on the Bakara on December 12 and was discharged as medically unfit on 19 March 1919.
