John Hender was born in England and enlisted at Keswick, Adelaide on 05 July 1915. He embarked on 18 November 1915 with B Company 32nd Battalion and later served in France from June 1916. After receivinga severe gunshot wound to his abdomen on 19 July 1916, John was evacuated to England and eventually returned home because of "mitral disease of the heart" on 31st December 1916.

After the war he resided at Wilunga and Mclaren Vale. He married Kathleen Veronica Toole in 1919 and Died at Royston Park on 06 September 1959 aged 64years.
