Craftsman Leslie Walter Hayes (Service Nos:Q121102/QX57372) initially emlisted in the ACMF on 15 May 1941 as a Private, and served with 3 Armoured Troops Workshop and 299 Light Aid Detachment (LAD) - Trade Group Driver Mechanic, reclassified Mechanic Motor Transport. On 6 September 1943 Private Hayes enlisted in the AIF, and was attached to 12 and 11 Australian Vehicle Park Workshops - graded Fitter. Craftsman Hayes was attached to 3 Armoured Troops Workshop at Discharge on 3 October 1945.

The second of four children, Les was born in Brisbane QLD in 1911 to Arthur Frederick Hais (aka Hayes, Leslie Frederick Arthur and Arthur Leslie Davis; b1891 in Allora, QLD) and his first wife Mabel Agnes Bury (b1890 in Brisbane, QLD). Arthur (a Biscuit Maker) and Mabel (a Machinist) married in 1909 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family and Arthur worked as a Fireman and Labourer. Arthur served in the AIF in WWI (Service No:4520), and following his Discharge remained in Melbourne and then moved to Sydney - he remarried and worked as a Labourer. Mabel raised their children on her own, working as a Bag Machinist and remarrying in 1940.

Les worked in Mackay as a Cement Moulder and in Brisbane as a Labourer, and was a Sheet Metal Worker in Brisbane in 1940 when he married Eileen Winifred Costello (b1915 in Brisbane, QLD) - Eileen was working as a Dressmaker in Brisbane. Following his Discharge from the Army, Les and Eileen settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and Les was a Metal Worker until retirement. Les died in 1994 and Eileen in 2004.
