Private Albert Montague Smith (Service No:1248) enlisted in the AIF on 6 October 1914 and was attached to 15th Infantry Battalion H Coy when he embarked from Melbourne on 22 December 1914 on board HMAT Ceramic A40. Private Smith was WiA at the Dardanelles on 7 May 1915 (GSW to his arm) and was evacuated to hospital in London. Private Smith embarked from Portland for the RTA on 12 December 1915 on board the Star of England, and was Discharged on 9 June 1916. Older brother Edward was KiA at Gallipoli in April 1915.
Born in 1894 at Oatlands Tasmania, Albert was the eighth of thirteen children of George Thomas Smith (b1859 at Oatlands, Tasmania) and Mary Ann Diaper-Scanlan (b1860 at Oatlands, Tasmania). George (a Labourer) and Mary Ann (a Domestic Servant) married in 1882 in Oatlands where they settled and raised their family and George was a Labourer.
Albert was a Labourer prior to his Service, and in 1916 in Launceston, Tasmania he married Rose Ethel Cutler (b1893 in Evandale, Tasmania). Albert and Rose settled at St Leaonards where Albert worked as a Cleaner and Driver. Albert died in 1973 and Rose in 1977.
