Biography contributed by Brenda Heilig

My great grandfather was born in Hohenhaslach, Germany. He arrived in Australia on board the ship Merkara when he was very young, 7 or 8 years old. They initially settled at Highfields on the Darling Downs in Queensland.

He worked on the land around South East Queensland and moved to Brisbane in about 1933. He was employed as a Powder Monkey with the Brisbane Water and Sewarage Board. He joined the Australian Military forces in 1940 lowering his age by about 10 years so he could serve his new country. He was a very proud Australian man despite being born in Germany. He stated on his enlistment papers that he was born in Glen Innis in NSW but he was not. After the war he worked in Brisbane sawmills as a saw doctor.

He retired to Deagon in Brisbane.

His wife Martha Christina nee Kanowski died in November 1942 while he was away with the Army. They had 5 sons - my grandfather Herbert Christoph (Bert), Walter Roy (Roy), Alexaner Leonard (Len), Harold Francis (Frank or Terry) and Keith Noel (Noel).
