Charles (Carl Hermann) was the fifth of nine children of Carl (Charlie) August Wilhelm Hingst (born 1862 in Germany) and Augusta Wilhelmina Luisa Loose (born 1862 in Germany). Charlie immigrated with his family in 1873, arriving in Maryborough, QLD on board the Alardus and Augusta arrived in 1883 on board the Roma. Charlie and Augusta married in 1883 in Laidley, QLD where they settled and raised their family.

Charles was a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD in 1919 when he married Sylvia Alison Ward (born 1902 in Ipswich, QLD). They lived at Mt Crosby via Ipswich, where Charles worked as a Labourer, then as a Fettler at Calvert via Rosewood on the Darling Downs before moving to Sandgate in 1930 where he worked as a Carpenter's Labourer.

In 1942 Charles enlisted in the ACMF and was a Private (Service No:Q141033) with 15 Garrison Battalion when he was Discharged in September 1944. Brother August (Private; Service No:679) was KiA in WWI and Frank (Trooper; Service No:3062 and Private; Service No:Q155502) served in WWI and WWII.

Charles and Sylvia remained in Sandgate, where Charles worked as a Labourer. He died in 1980 and Sylvia in 1987.
