Son of Alfred Usher of London, England.

Husband of Beatrice Victoria Lizzie Gladys Usher nee Forsey of Date Street, Walworth, London, England. James and Beatrice were married on 11 March 1918 in the Registry Office, Southwark, England. T.H. Barker, Registrar, officiated. On the marriage certificate it stated James was a naval pensioner. When enlistinf in the AIF he had stated that he had served just over 10 years in the Royal Marines.

Commenced return to Australia on 26 July 1919 aboard HT Demothenes disembarking on 21 September 1919 with his wife and child.
