Staff Sergeant John Edward Howe (Service Nos:QX52427/Q104172) served with the ACMF (25th and 41st Infantry Battalions) and 11 Australian Division Reception Camp in New Guinea. Enlisting in the ACMF in December 1941, Sereant Howe was in New Guinea when he transferred to the AIF in April 1943 and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He served three tours in New Guinea (2 August 1942 - 17 July 1943; 26 September 1943 - 25 July 1944 and 6 September 1945 to 18 January 1946) and was Discharged in July 1946.
Born in 1918 in Oakey, Darling Downs in QLD, Jack was the youngest of two children of Sidney James Howe (b1885 in Sussex, England) and his second wife Mary Hartland (b1891 in Toowoomba, QLD). Sidney (a Miner) and Mary married in 1916 in Oakey on the Darling Downs, QLD. Sidney was a Furnace Stoker when he emigrated following the death of his first wife in 1911. He worked at Cabbage Tree Creek in Ipswich, QLD as a Labourer before moving to Oakey on the Darling Downs and working as a Coal Miner. He and Mary then moved to Condong, NSW where Sidney was a Farmer, and then to Kunghur at Murwillumbah on the Tweed River, NSW.
Jack was working as an Iron Machinist in Kunghur, NSW in 1941, and following his Discharge from the Army in 1946 married Mary Theresa Connelly (b1927 in Mareeba, QLD). Jack and Mary settled in Mareeba where Jack worked as a Salesman before becoming a Taxi Proprietor. Jack died in 1996 and Mary in 2013.
