Biography contributed by Adelaide High School

Frederick Beno Hirshfeld was born in 1897 near the town of Brown in South Australia. Although this small and rural town was his birthplace, he grew up in the larger town of Mannum, in the Mid-Murray regions of South Austrlia. His mother was a Mrs Augusta Hirschfeld, although there are no records to be found on his father. Frederick was a Lutheran, which is a common religion for those living in Mannum (based on 2016 census).

Frederick worked as a farm labourer, until deciding to join the armed forces in the second year of WW1, in 1915. The exact date of his enlistment was the 4th of May, 1915 in Adelaide. He was 18 and 11 months old at the date of his enlistment. Frederick had had no previous experience with the armed forces and had participated in no other conflict before WW1.

Frederick was asigned to 27th Infantry Battalion, and given the Regimental Number 1728. He embarked with the rank of Private with the rest of the 27th Infantry Battalion onboard "Kanowa" on the 23rd of June 1915. Throughout his service he fought in Gallipoli and the Western Front, while also having previous training in Egypt.

Frederick was wounded twice during his service, once with an unknown date, and once on the 23rd of April, with an injury to the right wrist. Frederick returned to Australia on the first of July 1919.

Upon returning to Australia, Frederick married Jeanie Hirshfeld, and went to live in Western Australia in the town of Carlisle. He later died in June 1931, aged 35 years.
