Noel was an insurance broker at the time of his enlistment in January 1916. His parents were Benjamin Merrill and Rosa Helen Radcliffe who lived in England. Noel was discharged in June 1917 as medically unfit. He lived at Woody Point for a short while before dying in 1929.

The death occured suddenly shortly before noon today of Mr. Noel Redcliffe Merrill, 51, at Bribie House, Woody Point.  The deceased was a returned soldier.  Dr. R. Gray, of Brisbane who was in the district, was summoned and he pronounced life extinct, the cause of death being heart failure.  It is understood that the deceased had been under treatment in the Military Hospital in Brisbane at different times.  The body will be removed to Brisbane where a military funeral will be held.
