Len was the eighth of nine children of William Robert Johnson (b1876 in Ipswich, QLD) and Rosina May Porter (b1881 in Ipswich, QLD). William (a Saw Sharpener) and Rosina married in 1897 in Ipswich, QLD where they settled and raised their family. William worked as a Saywer, Lengthsman and Mill Manager.
In 1940 Len was a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD when he married Hilda Jean Gardner (b1919 in Ipswich, QLD). In 1943 Len enlisted in the Australian Army (Private; Service Nos:QX52587/Q18855) in New Guinea. He was attached to 15 Infantry Battalion AACC when he was Discharged in January 1946. Brothers George Fletcher Johnson (Private; Service No:Q144803), Robert Victor Johnson (Sapper, Service No:QX50660) and Mervyn Ernest Johnson (Private; Service No:Q108178) and Father-in-Law Lambert Richard Benjamin Gardner (Private; Service No:QX19502) also served in WWII.
A keen Cricketer, Len played in the Test Match against India in 1948 - scoring twenty five not out and taking five wickets. Len and Hilda settled in Ipswich where Len worked as a Labourer and Striker. He died in 1977 and Hilda in 2016.
