William was the eldest of three children of Michael Joseph Kendrick (b1874 in Ipswich, QLD) and Agnes Isabella Irving (b1882 in Ipswich, QLD). Michael (a Carter) and Agnes (a Machinist) married in 1907 in Ipswich, QLD where they settled and raised their three sons. By 1914 Michael was working as a Miner.
William was a Butcher in Ipswich QLD in 1933 when he married Ena Elizabeth Livermore (b1912 in Ipswich, QLD). William and Ena settled in Ipswich, and in August 1941 William enlisted in the Australian Army (Sapper; Service No:QX22843). In December 1941, William was with 2/11 Field Coy - part of the Australian 'Gull Force' which sailed for Ambon Island in the Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia today).
