William was the sixth of eight children of Joseph Charles Kitching (born 1872 in Berwickshire, Scotland) and Eliza Ann Tite (born 1882 in Warwickshire, England). Joseph arrived in Maryborough, QLD with his parents in 1883 on board the Shenir, and Eliza arrived in Brisbane, QLD with her parents in 1884 on board the Quetta. Raised in Maryborough, QLD Joseph was a Coal Miner at Ipswich, QLD in 1899 when he married Eliza. They settled in Bundanba, Ipswich and raised their family - Joseph worked as a Coal Miner.
William was living at Bundanba in Ipswich and worked as a Coal Miner when he enlisted in the Army in January 1942. He was a Private (Service No:QX28834) attached to 1 Australian Parachute Refolding Platoon when he was Discharged in December 1944. Younger brother Leonard Ross (Service No:B4691) served in the RAN.
William returned to Bundanba in Ipswich QLD where he worked as a Coal Miner until his death in 1974.
