Vincent Henry Graves born in 1891 enlisted in the Australian Army at 24. He was raised as a Roman Catholic and he spent his childhood in Longwood Mt Lofty, South Australia, alongside his mother, Sarah Graves. Before his military service Vincent worked as a labourer.
He was 5 Foot 8, he weighed 152bs. His skin tone was tan, while he had brown eyes and brown hair. The Certificate of Medical Examination claimed that Mr Graves had healthy lungs, heart, and eyes were all in perfect condition, and had the free use of his joints and limbs. Adelaide was the place of his embarkment, and the ship he embarked on was HMAT Benalla A24. He left Australia 27th October 1915. He disembarked in Egypt and was taken on strength with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Feburary 1916. He served in the Middle East.
After the war ended Mrs Sarah Grave (Vincent’s mother) received a letter claiming that Vincent had been absent without leave. He was reported missing in January 1919 and declared an illegal absentee. A court of enquiry held at Moascar on 9th February declared he had absented himself and was still absent. He was arrested in Alexandria at 11:30 on 15/02/19. He was found guilty and forfeited 99 days pay. He went AWL again 3 days in March and was fined 5 days pay.
He was repatriated back to Australia arrving in August 1919. He was formally discharged 17/11/1919.
