Add my storyBiography contributed by Faith Lanson
Ross Smith Lanson was living in Camooweal, Qld. As his eldest brother had enlisted Ross decided he too would do so. However his sisters have reported over the years that he raised his age when presenting in Darwin.
His Certificate of Discharge indicates he was a Corporal and Service Number QX58734 though the ID photo in his Record of Service Book shows Q304251.
Ross enlisted in the Citizen Military Forces from 14 December 1942 until 1 July 1943. He successfully passed his Army Driving Licence in March 1943 and joined the Australian Imperial Forces from 2 July 1943 until 17 May 1946. He was a Driver in the LHQ School of Mechanisation.
While based at an Army camp on the Grafton/Glen Innes road NSW, he met his wife Hope Donnelly whose brother was also at the Grafton Rd camp. Dances were held in Glen Innes each weekend which servicemen attended. Ross and Hope were married in St Patrick's Catholic Church, Glen Innes on 29 November 1944. Hope,S brother Roy was best man. Both men wore Army uniform.
On discharge Ross continued employment in the transport industry until forced retirement following an accident. He remained living in Glen Innes for several years however due to health issues moved to Gatton Qld to be closer to his son and family.
Due to complex health issues he was admitted to Ipswich General Hospital where he remained for several months and where he died on 6 July 2001, one day short of his 81 birthday.
Ross was buried in Glen Innes General Cemetery on 10 July 2001 with his wife who had predeceased him. An official memorial has been made in Qld Garden of Remembrance, Bridgeman Downs WALL 19 ROW F.
