Youngest of three siblings (Chester and Eric) who served in WWII, Private Iris Merle Leadbetter (Service No:QF270353) enlisted in the AWAS on 2 April 1943 - graded Stenographer - and was posted to HQ First Australian Army Training Battalion, and in August to 3 AWAS Admin Cadre. Private Leadbetter served in New Guinea (2 May 1942 - 16 October 1945), and was Discharged on 30 November 1945.
The youngest of six children, iris was born in Mitchell, QLD in 1923 to Charles Leadbetter (b1864 in Toolum, New South Wales) and his second wife Marion Julia Pittuck (nee Amos; b1884 at Mullett Creek via Bundaberg, QLD). Charles worked as a Stockman and Labourer in Charleville, Augathella, Bogantangum via Emerald and Baradilla via Mungallala prior to his marriage wth Marion. Charles and Marion settled at Dubydilla and then Bonarby via Mungallala, where they raised their family and Charles was a Stockman/Grazier.
Iris was working as a Clerk when she enlisted in the Army in 1943, and following her Discharge, in 1948 in married Ronald (Ron) Horace Hamilton (b1918 in Mitchell, QLD) - Ron served in the Army (Service No:QX18427). Iris and Ron settled at Glenapp in Mitchell, where they raised their family and Ron was a Stockman/Grazier. Ron died in 1993.
