John Mattam Ledger, born in 1908 in Tumbarumbah, New South Wales was the eldest child of Clarence John Ledger ( born in 1875 in Hartley, New South Wales) and Anna Helena Mary Knaggs (born in 1875 in Newcastle, New South Wales. C;larence was a Bank Manager and Justice of the Peace, and John grew up in Grafton, NSW, Rockhamptonm Maryborough and Brisbane QLD.

John started work in Newcastle NSW as a Turner, and was working as a Multigrapher in Brisbane, QLD when he married Merle Evison Watson in 1937.

John elisted in the Australian Army and served as a Warrant Officer Class II (Service No: QX47916) with 102 Australian Brigade Workshop, After his Discharge in 1945, John and Merle lived in Brisbane, QLD where he worked as a Clerk until 1968. He then lived in Wynnum, QLD, working as an Engineering Representative until retiring to Berowra in NSW, where he died in 1982
