3 Die In Old Gold Shaft
BRISBANE, Thursday—Three men have died at the bottom of an old mine shaft at Normanby Goldfields. They are believed to have been overcome by fumes while attempting to trace a gold seam at the bdttom of the old shaft. A 10-man rescue party headed by a policeman found the men just before dusk today. They will return early tomorrow morning with the bodies.
In the party are four policemen, a doctor and five other men from Collinsville. They left Bowen, Central Queensland early today. The three dead men were: Tom Shannon, 34, his brother Glen, 31, Alec Lennig, 50. All the men were married.
Gas Fumes
The men are believed to have been overcome by gas fumes from an engine they took down the mine to pump out wate. The men have been working and living in the area for the past three months. Tom and Glen Shannon are graziers in the Prosperpine district. A third brother, Bill Shannon, of Bloomsbury Statiyon, visited the mine.
He could not find the men, and gave the alarm.
