Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private John William Mackrill (Service No:Q207699) served in the ACMF with 10 Battalion (QLD) VDC from 6 March 1942 to 1 June 1944. Youngest brother Joseph, who served with 2/33 Infantry Battalion, was killed in New Guinea in 1943.

Jack was born in Bundaberg, QLD in 1909, seventh of ten children of George Stephenson Mackrill (b1871 in Lincolnshire, England) and Harriet Martha Smith (b1876 in Leicestershire, England). George (a Labourer) and Harriet married in 1896 in Addingham, Yorkshire. George and Harriet lived in Yorkshire - George was a Waterside Worker and Platelayer - until 1908 when they immigrated, arriving with five children in Brisbane QLD on board the Omrah. The family settled in Bundaberg, where George was a Sugar Cane Farmer until his death in 1919.

Jack worked as a Labourer and Tobacco Grower at South Kolan via Bundaberg, and in 1939 in Bundaberg married Myrtle Ada Bates (b1914 in Bundaberg, QLD). Jack and Myrtle settled at Kolan and then Oakwood via Bundaberg, where they raised their family and Jack was a Farmer. Jack died in 2000 and Myrtle in 2006.
