John was the youngest of two children of Ambrose John Madden (born 1883 in Cooktown, QLD) and Ellen Bouch Hill (born 1885 in Cooktown, QLD). In 1913, Ambrose was a Grocer in Herberton when he married Ellen. Following his death in 1925, Ellen remarried.
In 1939 John was a Clerk in Cairns when he enlisted in the Australian Army. He was a Private (Service No:QX3523) attached to 2/32 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in November 1945.
John returned to Cairns and was working as a Clerk in 1952 when he married Kathleen Eugenie McCafferty (born 1918 in Cairns, QLD). Kathleen had served with the Australian Army Medical Women's Service as a Private (Service Nos:QFX52053/Q271013) from May 1943 to December 1945. Brother-in-Law James Frederick McCafferty Jnr (Private, Service Nos:QX53349/Q116540) also served in WWII.
John and Kathleen lived in Cairns where John worked as a Clerk, and following Kathleen's death in 1965, a Watchman.
