James was the sixth of eight children of James Mahoney (born 1860 in Ireland) and Mary Mulcahy (born 1864 in Ireland). James and Mary married in Gympie, QLD in 1890 and lived in Gympie, Toowoomba, Jimboomba, Brisbane and Gowrie Junction on the Darling Downs in QLD where James Snr was a Farmer and a Labourer.

James had worked as a Labourer at Fairleigh Mill in Mirani, QLD and was a Labourer in Brisbane when he married Mary Helene Raan (born 1916 at Kilcoy in QLD) in 1934 in Brisbane, QLD. 

James was a Labourer in Brisbane QLD when he enlisted in the AMF in January 1942. He served as a Private and Bombardier (Service No:QX28684) with 17th Field Regiment and was Discharged in April 1943). Brothers Patrick Joseph (Service No:20842), John Thomas (Service No:3404) and Daniel (Service No:15709) served in WWI and John also served in WWII (Service No:Q227794).

Following his Discharge, James and Mary lived in Brisbane, where James was a Labourer before moving to Childers, QLD where James was a Saw Benchman. They were at Hazeldeane via Kilcoy, QLD in 1954 where James was a Farmer, and by 1963 the family had moved to Woodford, QLD where James worked as a Labourer. James died in 1967 and Mary in 2009.
