Private Ernest Jack Mansfield (Service No:QX3617) enlisted in the Australian Army on 3 November 1939 and served with 2/12th Infantry Battalion in the Middle East and New Guinea. Private Mansfield was WiA in New Guinea on 11 January 1943 (GSW to thigh and hip) and was Discharged on 27 July 1944 (Medically Unfit).

Born in 1910 in Glen Innes NSW, Jack was the youngest of three children of Ernest Mansfield (b1878 in Goulburn, NSW) and Gertrude Sarah Matthews (b1878 in Goulburn, NSW). Ernest (a Teacher) and Gertrude married in 1905 in Goulburn, NSW. Ernest had started work in Goulburn at fourteen years of age as a Pupil Teacher and taught in primary schools at Shannon Vale, Koorawatha, Wombat, Kingsvale, Furracabad, Stewarts Brook and Red Range nr Glen Innes.

Jack started work in Red Range nr Glen Innes as a Joiner and Carpenter and was staying at the Australian Hotel in Cairns, QLD in 1939 when he enlisted in the AIF. He was in Sydney NSW in 1943 when he married Theresa McCibbin (b1920 in Ayrshire, Scotland) - Theresa had immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1929, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Balranald. Theresa worked as a Salesgirl in Sydney and was an Aircraft Worker when she and Jack married. Jack and Theresa lived in Hornsby, NSW where Jack was a Forestry Worker before moving to Sydney in the early 1950s where Jack was a Factory Worker. By the late 1950s the couple had settled in Wyong, NSW where Jack was an Orchardist until retiring in the late 1960s to Bateau Bay in the Robertson Region of NSW. Jack died in 1995 and Theresa in 1999.
