Youngest of the three brothers who served in the Army (Jack and Maurice in WWI), Sapper Malcolm Alexander Marnane (Service No:QX7828) enlisted in the AIF on 18 June 1940 - graded Carpenter - and served with 2/7 Field Coy in the Middle East (3 February 1941 - 28 February 1943; Tobruk, El Alamein), New Guinea (31 August 1943 - 7 February 1944; Lae, Huon Peninsula) and Borneo (23 February 1945 - 5 November 1945; Morotai, Tarakan). Sapper Marnane was attached to 2/7 Field Coy at Discharge on 6 December 1945.
Youngest of four children (sons), Malcolm was born in Mareeba, QLD in 1904 to William Marnane (b1848 in Singleton, New South Wales) and Elizabeth (Bessie) Kerr McLuckie (b1865 in Glasgow, Scotland). William was a Farmer in Morpeth NSW before moving to North QLD in 1872 when he shipped a load of horses to Cooktown. He joind the Gold Rush to the Palmer Goldfields and Tait Diggings - he was a Prospector and Storekeeper.. With his brother he estabilshed a carter service using pack mules and horses to transport raw ore to Cairns and goods and provisions to the Diggings and to Irvinebank. William, also a speculator in mine shares, and Bessie married in Cairns in 1893 and settled in the district where they raised their family and William was a Farmer. Both were active in their local community - Bessie was President of the Atherton Ladies Defence League; William was a member of the Cairns Harbor Borad and of the Tinaroo Divisional Board, Chairman of Tinaroo Shire Council, and a prime mover in the establishment of a dairy industry in the Atherton region.
In the 1920s Malcolm was a Farmer at Warrabullen via Innisfail, and in the early 1930s was a Field Worker in Babinda via Gordonvale. He established a Tobacco Farm at Tabacum via Mareeba in the mid 1930s, and following his Discharge from the Army worked as a Janitor at Mt isa Mines until retirement. Malcolm retired to Brisbane, where he died in 1976.
