Edward was the youngest of three children of Edward Richardson Martin (b1886 at Deep Creek, Gympie, QLD) and Rebecca Butler (b1886 in Gympie, QLD). Edward Snr (a Miner) and Rebecca married in 1909 in Gympie, QLD. By 1916 the family had moved to Brisbane, where Edward Snr worked as a Fireman, Motor Driver and Labourer.
Edward enlisted in the Australian Army in November 1941 (Service Nos:QX42715/Q121292) and was a Private attached to 32 Anti Aircraft Battery when he was Discharged in June 1946.
Returning to Brisbane, Edward was working as a Salesman when he married Heather McCulloch (b1926 in Mackay, QLD) in 1950. Edward and Heather moved to Baddow, Wide Bay, QLD where Edward was a Salesman before relocating to Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast in the 1960s. They later moved to Brisbane where Edward was a Foreman. Heather died in 1965 and Edward in 1979.
