Sydney was the eldest of seven children of John James Michael Maxwell (b1897 in Ipswich, QLD) and Evelyn Alice Nunn (b1896 in Ipswich, QLD). John - a Coach Painter - and Evelyn married in 1918 in Ipswich, QLD where they settled and raised their family.

Working in Ipswich as a Labourer, Sydney enlisted in the ACMF (Private; Service No:Q47884) and was attached to 1st Light Field Ambulance when he was Discharged on 14 January 1941, He re-enlisted the next day, serving as a Private (Service No:QX46849) with 101 Light Field Ambulance in New Guinea (1943 - 1945). Sydney was Discharged in December 1945. 

Sydney married Jean Edwards (b1922 in Ipswich, QLD) in 1942, and following his Discharge from the Army, Sydney and Jean settled in Ipswich where Sydney worked as a Potter, Sydney died in 1995 and Jean in 2009)
