Archibald Thomas Winter was awarded the DCM for conspicuous gallantry when he led a section in a raid on an enemy strong point in Belgium on the 3 March 1918. He led the raiders with great precision through to the 'jumping off' point, and in the final rush were brought right on to the objective. The German defenders fought vigorously and heavy hand to hand to fighting evolved in which Winter accounted for two of the enemy, each of whom were in the act of shooting at his mates.
