Victor Alexander Mazlin, WWI

Trooper Victor Alexander Mazlin, 57253, 5th Reinforcements Lighthorse - Victor suffered a fracture to the base of his skull resulting in permanent deafness in his right ear. He was discharged as medically unfit without having served overseas. He re-enlisted in WWII at the age of 45.

Victor was one of 4 brothers who enlisted in WWI. Two of his brothers were killed at Gallipoli. The other one returned to Australia.

WW1 Photo

At the time of enlisting in WW2 Victor would have been a 46 year old man, the photo on this record is obviously of a younger man. The uniform worn in the photo also does not look typical of WW2 service. One explanation could well be that Victor Alexander Mazlin (Regimental No 57253) also enlisted for WW1 at Cairns in 1917 at the age of 21. During training it was discovered he had complete nerve deafness in the right ear as a result of a fracture to the base of the skull and he was medically discharged before embarking for overseas service. The photograph appears on p. 178 of 'Queenslanders who fought in the Great War.' A second photograph appears on p. 24 of The Queenslander Pictorial, supplement to the Queenslander, 30 March, 1918, both relate to his WW1 enlistment.
