Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

James (Jnr) was one of two children born to James (Fred) Frederick McCafferty Snr (born 1878 in Toowoomba, QLD) and Kathleen Lysaght (born 1884 in Cairns, QLD). Fred was a Hotel Licensee in Cairns until 1930, when he worked as a Labourer on the Docks.

James Jnr worked as a Clerk on the Docks in Cairns until he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1943. James was in New Guinea when he enlisted, and he served with 47 Infantry Battalion as a Private (Service Nos: Q116540/QX53349). He was Discharged in 1946 and returned to work in Cairns as a Clerk.

In 1950 James married Marjorie Enid Butler (born 1912 in Korumburra, Gippsland in Victoria). Marjorie had served as a WRAN (8 February 1942 - 25 June 1946) as a Petty Officer (Service No: WR724). Marjorie was a Sick Berth Attendant on HMAS Cerberus and HMAS Lonsdale. Marjorie's brothers - John (Service No: VX7496), Raymond (Service no: VX119929), Francis (V389435) and her twin Norman (V389080) - also served in WWII.

James and Marjorie settled in Cairns in QLD where James was a Tally Clerk on the Docks - he was responsible for counting and weighing goods and matching them with shipping invoices. Marjorie died in 1982 and James in 1988.
