Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Francis Patrick McCraith (Service No:Q187462) enlisted in the AIF in WWI on two occasions as a Private (Service No:Q10113) - 1914 with 15th Battalion and 1916 with Mining Coy - and was Discharged as Medically Unfit. In WWII Private McCraith served with No 1 Garrison Battalion from 6 June 1940 to 5 September 1940.

Francis was born in Brisbane, QLD in 1892, youngest of three children of John Batholomew McCraith (b1857 in Tipperary, Ireland) and his first wife Johanna Shelock (b1864 in Tipperary, Ireland). John and Johanna married in 1888 in Brisbane, where they settled and raised their family. John worked as a Poultry Farmer and, following Johanna's death in 1894, John remarried - he was a Milk Vendor and Poultry Farmer in Brisbane.

Francis worked in Brisbane and Longreach as a Labourer, and in 1918 worked as a Maintenance Man in Thargomindah. In 1919 in Brisbane, Francis married Violet May Michie (nee Cherry; b1892 in Warwick, QLD) - Violet was a Widow. Francis and Violet lived in Brisbane (where Francis worked as a Labourer and Watchman), in Bundaberg (where Francis was a Wardsman), and by the late 1920s had settled in Brisbane. Francis worked as a Wharf Labourer, Railway Employee and Lift Driver before his death in 1948. Violet died in 1963.
