Albert Edward IBBOTT (Service Number 3539) was born on 5th September 1887 at Lambeth, London. From October 1912 he was working as a conductor on the Sydney trams. He was still in this role when he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 7th September 1915. He enlisted at Sydney two days later. He gave his sister, Gertrude Emily Ibbott, as his next of kin.
He left Australia from Sydney aboard HMAT ‘Aeneas’ on 20th December 1915. He was taken on the strength of the 55th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt, in February 1916. Ibbott embarked on the transport ‘Caledonian’ at Alexandria in June and reached Marseilles at the end of that month.
Three weeks later he was missing in action. After a few days this report was changed to killed in action. Sgt J Jefferies (2854) reported:
‘I knew Ibbott. He was in my section 13 in the 13th pltn, D Co. He was killed at Fromelles by a shell on the 19th July. Pte Young who was with Ibbott and who has since been killed in a raiding party was with Ibbott at the time of his death and told me about it. Ibbott’s jaw was carried away. He was tall, fair young man about 24. The body lay in No Man’s Land and may have been fetched in with other bodies next night.’
Albert Ibbott was buried in Cemetery Sailly-sur-la-Lys, 2¼ miles ENE of Estaires, five miles SW of Armentieres. Chaplain Rev W Meredith Holliday officiated.
