Leslie was the fourth of six children of Leslie Graham McDonald (born 1881 in Mt Kembla, NSW) and Lillian Norfolk Beeching (born 1880 on board ship in the Bay of Biscay - family anecdote is that Lillian was born during a storm and packed in a bathtub for safety). Leslie Snr was a Motor Painter when he married Lillian in Lismore, NSW in 1906. Leslie Snr and Lillian had moved to Nambour, QLD by 1919 and then Brisbane where Leslie worked as a Motor Painter. Leslie Snr was a Farmer briefly at Boonah, Ipswich QLD before settling in Samford and working as a Painter.
Leslie had worked as a Farm Labourer in Samford, QLD since finishing school and enlisted in the ACMF in January 1942. He was a Private (Service No:Q122673) attached to AASCLOC when he was Discharged in March 1945. In February 1942 Leslie married Katherine Mavis Paul (born 1922 in Toowoomba, QLD) at Caboolture, QLD, and following his Discharge from the Army Leslie and Katherine lived on the Dayboro Line at Samford where Leslie was a Farm Labourer. In the 1950s they had a farm at Maleny, QLD before returning to Samford in the early 1960's. Leslie worked as a Labourer at Samford until his death in 1967. Katherine died in 1997.
