Mac attended boarding school at Ispwich Boys' Grammar School and then attended the University of QLD (King's College) where he was awarded blues for cricket and football - and in 1930 a Bachelor of Science. In 1926 Mac was appointed a Cadet with the Department of Agriculture and Stock and in 1928 he was an Assistant Entymologist with the QLD Bureau of Sugar Statistics - initially at Meringa and then in Mackay QLD.

In 1933 in Bundamba, Ipswich QLD Mac married Mazellah (Zelda) Isabelle Sophia Walker (b1906 in Bundamba, Ipswich, QLD) - Zelda was a Teacher at Brisbane Girls' High School.
