William was the fifth of six children of Charles Henry MacKenzie (b1888 in Ipswich, QLD) and Kathleen May Gorman (b1881 in Toowoomba, QLD). Charles - a Labourer - and Kathleen married in 1908 in Ipswich, QLD. Charles joined the QLD Railways and worked as a Porter in Ipswich, Goondiwindi and Warwick. Following Kathleen's death in 1924, Charles remarried and settled in Ipswich with his second wife and children.

William was a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD when he enlisted on 6 September 1940. He was a Sergeant (Service Nos:QX39561/Q59830) attached to 55 Field Park Coy RAE when he was Discharged in March 1946. Uncle David John MacKenzie (Private; Service No:457) was KiA in 1916 in France, and brothers John (Jack) Henry (Sapper; Service Nos:QX50717/Q59829) and Leslie (Les) Raymond (Sapper; Service Nos:QX50935/Q11319) also served in WWII.

In 1946 William was in Brisbane, QLD working as a Linesman when he married June Patricia Breen (b1921 in Rockhampton, QLD) - June was working in Brisbane as a Telephonist. William and June settled in Brisbane, QLD where William worked as a Linesman until he retired. William died in 2002 and June in 2019.
