Alwyn was the eldest of three children of Alexander Hugh Caddle McLean (born 1897 in Lanarkshire, Scotland) and Catherine Roberta Neilan (born 1900 in Ipswich, QLD). Alexander was a Miner in Ipswich, QLD when he married Catherine in 1917. They settled in Ipswich where Alexander was a Miner.

In 1940 Alwyn was a Labourer in Brisbane, QLD when he married Margaret Mercer (born 1921 in Ipswich, QLD). Margaret was working as a Veneer Machinist in Brisbane. Alwyn enlisted in the Army in June 1943, and was a Private (Service Nos:QX54831/Q16602) attached to 9 Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in December 1945. Brothers-in-Law Hector Mercer (Private; Service No:Q47829), Allan (Snow) Mercer (Private; Service Nos:QX53107/Q269274), and John Baxter McCorquodale (Private; Service No:Q145416), and Father-in-Law Thomas Thomson Mercer (Private; Service Nos:Q16420/Q89366) also served in WWII. Brother-in-Law Robert (Barnie) Mercer served in WWII (Private;Service No:QX54102) and the Korean War (Lance Corporal; Service No:14435).

Alwyn and Margaret settled in Ipswich, QLD where Alwyn was a Labourer and Coal Miner. Margaret died in 1990 and Alwyn in 1995.
