Francis was the third of six children of Francis (Frank) Herbert McLean Snr (born 1889 in Maryborough, QLD) and Martha Isabella Butler (born 1886 in Gympie, QLD). Frank - a Fireman - and Martha married in 1909 in Gympie, QLD where they lived until moving to Maryborough in 1920. Frank worked as a Fireman.
Francis was a Labourer in Maryborough, QLD in 1938 when he married Phyllis Adele Burchard (born 1920 in Maryborough, QLD). Francis and Phyllis settled in Maryborough where Francis was working as a Builder's Labourer when he enlisted in the ACMF in February 1941. He served as a Private (Service No:Q42190) with 49 Battalion in New Guinea and was Discharged in January 1942. Brother Gordon Vivian (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:79301) also served in WWII.
Francis and Phyllis settled in Maryborough, QLD where Francis worked as a Labourer, Caravan Park Manager and Meat Worker. He died in 1996 and Phyllis in 2008.
