Julian Blain was a Roman Catholic man who fought for Australia in WWI. He was born in 1870 in Belgium and was a miner. He was 6 feet tall and weighed 196 lbs with blue eyes, light brown hair, and a dark complexion with tattoos on both arms. He lived in Adelaide South Australia and his next of kin was his wife, Louisa Blain. He enlisted at the age of 44 years and 5 months and was initially in the 10th Infantry Battalion. On the 2nd of February 1915, Blain embarked and left Melbourne, Australia on board the HMAT A46 clan Macgillivray with the rest of the 10th battalion.
Julian Blain arrived in Egypt in early December with the 9th, 11th, and 12th battalions to form the 3rd Brigade in the 1st Division. After training in Egypt, the Brigade arrived in the Anzac Cove in Turkey to participate in the Gallipoli campaign which lasted from the 7th of February 1915 to the 9th of January 1916. Members of the 10th battalion invaded the furthest island in any initial fighting done by Australian troops before. The battalion helped defend the beach against a heavy counterattack in May. After this, the 10th battalion joined the failed August Offensive. On the 10th of October 1915, Julian Blain was admitted to hospital for gastritis where he quickly recovered and returned to the battlefield. Only 6 days later on the 16th, Blain was admitted for inflamed dental pulpitis. Casualties were high throughout the campaign, so in November 1915, the surviving members of the Brigade were withdrawn from the peninsula.
The 10th battalion was reorganised in Egypt in early 1916 to form the 50th battalion. Blain was transferred to the Western Front in March 1916 and took part in trench warfare in France and Belgium. On the 11th of January 1916, Blain was transferred to another hospital because of Dysentery. Not shortly after, on the 25th of April 1916, he returned to hospital for Rheumatism. Julian Blain was evacuated to Australia on the 4th of July 1916 via H.T.karoola because he was deemed medically unfit to fight in the war because of his diagnosis. On the 5th of July 1916, Blain was officially discharged from the Australian military.
