Biography contributed by Paul Trevor

'FALL OF COAL. Northern Miner's Death. ROCKHAMPTON, June 28.

Patrick John Newman, a miner, died In the Mackay Hospital on Saturday, as the result of a fall of coal in the Styx State coal mine on Thursday. Newman and another man, Thomas Baird, were working 800ft. underground when about two tons of lump coal became dislodged. Some of it fell on Newman. Baird cleared the coal away, and Newman was carried to the surface, where he was found to be suffering from a fracture of the spine. Newman, who was married, and had five children, was placed on the Townsvlle train and taken to Mackay, where he died. This is the first fatality at the Styx mine since it was opened 14 years ago.' from Queensland Times 29 Jun 1937 (nla.gov.au)
